The story behind Husk Lab Vault
Helen Micklewright opened Husk Lab Vault in March 2019 after spending six years coaching at a large commercial gym where the floor held 200 members and the coaching staff held four. The maths never worked. She watched people plateau, get hurt, and quietly stop coming because nobody had the time to notice they were doing something wrong. She left with a clear idea of what she wanted to build: a gym where the coach-to-member ratio was small enough to actually matter, and where the programming was written down and followed, not improvised session by session.
01 Programming written in 12-week blocks, reviewed after every cycle…
The space itself took three months to fit out. Helen sourced the platform flooring from a local industrial supplier and built the storage racks herself over two weekends with a friend who does metalwork. The barbell selection took longer. She tested eight different bars before settling on the ones currently in the rack, and she will happily tell you why each of the others was wrong if you ask. The gym opened with 14 founding members, most of them people who had trained with Helen at her previous job and followed her when she left.
02 Groups capped at 8 people per session, every session, no exceptions…
03 Every new member gets a movement screen before their first group class
04 Saturday open floor: uncoached, no booking, 8:00-11:00 for members
Helen Micklewright spent six years as a strength coach at a large commercial gym before opening Husk Lab Vault in 2019. She holds a NSCA-CPT personal training certification and a specialist certificate in barbell strength coaching. Before going into fitness, she worked briefly in logistics, which is where she picked up the habit of tracking everything in writing. She has competed in powerlifting at regional level and currently trains four mornings a week before the gym opens. Her programming philosophy is straightforward: do the boring stuff consistently, log it honestly, and adjust based on what the numbers say rather than how you feel on the day.
